Waxing is one of those services that feels intimidating until you have done it once. The fear comes from not knowing what to expect. Will it hurt? What do I wear? Do I need to trim beforehand? Can I have sex afterward? This guide answers every question a first-time wax client asks — and a few you were too nervous to ask. We wax eyebrows, upper lips, chins, full arms, underarms, full legs, half legs, brazilian, and bikini lines at Jeannie Nails. Every service follows the same hygiene and protocol standards. Here is everything you need to know.
Hair should be at least 1/4 inch long (about the length of a grain of rice) for the wax to grip properly. If it is shorter than that, the wax will not grab the hair and you will leave with stubble. If it is longer than 1/2 inch, trim it with scissors — do not shave. Overly long hair hurts more during removal because the wax has more surface area to pull against. The sweet spot is 1/4 to 1/2 inch. If you shaved last week and the hair is barely visible, wait another week before booking. Wasting wax on non-gripable hair is frustrating for everyone.
Clean skin waxes better. Shower within 4 hours of your appointment — not immediately before (your skin needs to cool down). Do not apply lotion, oil, deodorant, or powder to the area being waxed. These create a barrier between the wax and the hair. The wax will slip off instead of gripping. Arriving with a freshly cleansed, product-free area is the single easiest way to ensure a good result.
For a Brazilian or bikini wax: wear loose cotton underwear and loose pants or a skirt. Tight yoga pants or synthetic fabrics will rub against the freshly waxed skin and cause irritation. For leg wax: wear shorts or a dress — avoid tight jeans. For underarm wax: a tank top or sleeveless shirt. For eyebrow or facial wax: nothing special needed. The general rule: whatever covers the waxed area after the appointment should not be tight against the skin for at least 4 hours.
Yes, waxing hurts. It is a quick, sharp sensation that lasts 1-2 seconds per strip. The first wax of any area is the most painful because the hair follicles are at full strength. Each subsequent wax hurts less because the hair grows back finer and sparser. Brazilian waxing is the most intense — you are effectively removing hair from the most sensitive area of your body. But here is what clients tell us afterward: "It was not as bad as I expected." The anticipation is worse than the actual sensation. We use hard wax (no strip) for Brazilian and soft wax with muslin strips for legs and arms. Hard wax grabs the hair, not the skin, which reduces pain on sensitive areas.
Tell your technician if this is your first time. Tell them if you have sensitive skin, are on any exfoliating skincare products (retinol, tretinoin, AHAs, BHAs), or have any skin conditions (eczema, psoriasis, cuts, sunburn). These affect which wax type and temperature we use. Tell them if the wax feels too hot — do not just sit there in pain. Tell them if you need a break between strips. We work fast (a Brazilian takes 15-20 minutes total) but we can pause at any point. There is no shame in needing a breather. We see first-time clients every week. Nothing you say will surprise us.
Yes. You may be more sensitive to pain during your period, but it is safe to wax. Wear a tampon or menstrual cup — we do not wax over a pad. If you are cramping, take ibuprofen 30 minutes before your appointment.
Waxing removes hair from the root. Regrowth typically starts at 2-3 weeks (you may see fine hairs). Full regrowth takes 4-6 weeks. Most clients schedule every 4 weeks for maintenance. With regular waxing, regrowth becomes finer and sparser over time.
Smooth skin for 2-3 weeks, with gradual regrowth starting at week 3. The hair that grows back from waxing is softer and finer than shaving because the tip is tapered (not blunt-cut like a razor creates).
