Nail Strengthener Guide — Fix Weak, Peeling, or Brittle Nails

May 2026 · 3 min read

Weak nails peel, split, and break easily. The cause is usually environmental (frequent water exposure, harsh chemicals, cold-dry climates) or nutritional (biotin deficiency, iron deficiency, protein deficiency). Here is how to strengthen them.

Topical Strengtheners

The most effective topical strengthener is a formaldehyde-free nail hardener. Formaldehyde (present in some strengtheners from the 1990s) is now classified as a carcinogen and is banned in cosmetics in the EU. Modern strengtheners use nylon fibres or protein derivatives instead. At Jeannie Nails we carry Opi Nail Envy ($12) — a nylon-based strengthener that builds a flexible layer on the nail surface. Apply 2 coats on clean, dry nails every 3 days. Remove with acetone-free remover once a week and start fresh. The strengthener builds thickness over 4-6 weeks. What does not work: dipping nails in gelatin (an internet myth — gelatin molecules can not penetrate the nail plate). What does work: daily cuticle oil (jojoba-based, $8 at the salon) applied to the entire nail plate, not just the cuticle. The oil penetrates the nail plate through the nail surface and improves flexibility.

Nutritional Support

Biotin (vitamin B7): 2.5mg per day is the clinically proven dose for nail strengthening. A study of 45 participants with brittle nails found that 2.5mg biotin daily for 6 months reduced nail splitting by 25%. Available as a supplement ($8-15/month for 2.5mg). Results visible in 4-8 weeks. Collagen peptides: 10g per day (one scoop in coffee or water). Studies show improved nail growth rate and reduced breakage after 3 months. Iron: if you have iron-deficiency anaemia (common in menstruating women and people on restricted diets), your nails can become concave (spoon nails) and weak. Correcting the iron deficiency resolves the nail issue. Protein: nails are made of keratin (a protein). If your diet is low in protein, your nails grow slowly and break more easily. Eat at least 1.2g protein per kg of body weight per day.

What to Avoid

Avoid acrylic overlays on weak nails — the filing required for acrylic application thins the natural nail further. If you want strength and length, use a gel overlay instead (the gel is gentler to apply and remove). Avoid soaking nails in water for extended periods (the nail plate swells and contracts, creating micro-fractures in the nail layers). Avoid using nails as tools. Avoid metal nail files (ceramic or glass files are gentler). Avoid acetone-based polish remover more than once a week (acetone dries the nail plate and surrounding skin).

When to See a Doctor

If your nails are weak AND have changed colour (yellow, green, black), changed shape (spoon nails, clubbing), or are painful, the weakness is a symptom of an underlying condition (fungus, psoriasis, thyroid issue, anaemia). A doctor can run blood tests to rule out nutritional deficiencies and auto-immune conditions.
