Nail Salon Etiquette — Your First Visit Made Easy

May 2026 · 3 min read

Not sure what to expect at a nail salon? Here is a simple guide to make your first visit comfortable and ensure a great experience for you and your nail technician.

Before Your Appointment

Arrive with clean, bare nails. Remove any existing polish at home (or we can remove it for a small fee with a regular service). For gel or acrylic removal, let the salon handle it — attempting to peel off gel at home damages the natural nail. If you are getting a pedicure, wear sandals or loose shoes (tight shoes on freshly polished toes cause smudging). Arrive 5 minutes early to fill out a service form (your first visit). Bring reference photos if you want a specific nail art design (photos help the technician understand exactly what you want). Cancel or reschedule at least 4 hours ahead. Last-minute cancellations affect the technician's income.

During the Service

No phone calls during a service. The technician uses sharp tools near your hands and feet. A sudden arm movement from answering a call can cause injury. Texting and browsing are fine. Let the technician know immediately if something hurts (a nail clipped too short, a buffer touching the cuticle, water too hot — we can adjust immediately but can not fix it after). If you are not sure what you want, say "I need a recommendation" rather than "I do not know" — the technician will suggest options based on your nail type, lifestyle, and budget. Do not trim your own cuticles at home before a service. The technician will do this professionally and over-trimming at home leads to infection.

Tipping and Payment

Standard tip for nail services in Canada: 15-20% of the service price. A $30 gel manicure = $4.50-6.00 tip. For exceptional service (nail art, extra care, patience with difficult nails): 20-25%. Tip in cash if possible (the technician receives it directly). Tip on credit card is fine but the salon may pool tips. Jeannie Nails accepts cash, debit, and credit. The tip is not included in the service price unless you are paying for a package or special.

After the Service

Avoid water for 1 hour after a service (the polish or gel needs time to harden fully). Do not use your nails as tools. Do not pick at the polish if it chips — come back for a touch-up. Schedule your next appointment before you leave (salon calendars fill up, especially on weekends). If you have an issue with your service (chipping within 24 hours, discomfort, poor application), contact the salon within 48 hours. Jeannie Nails offers free touch-ups within 7 days for any service issue.
