How to Pick the Best Nail Shape for Your Hand

May 2026 · 3 min read

Your natural nail shape and hand structure determine what nail shape looks best. Here is a guide from Jeannie Nails.

Short, Stubby Fingers — Go Oval or Almond

Short fingers need elongating. Oval (slightly rounded, moderate length past the fingertip, 2-3mm) creates a visual line that extends the finger. Almond (tapered, pointed at the tip, 3-5mm past the fingertip) creates even more elongation. Both shapes visually lengthen the hand. Avoid square or coffin — the flat top creates a visual cut-off point that makes short fingers look shorter.

Long, Thin Fingers — Go Round, Square, or Squoval

Long fingers can carry any shape, but round (short, natural curve, follows the fingertip shape, 1-2mm past) or square (flat free edge, sharp corners, 2-3mm past) provide balance by adding visual width at the tip. Squoval (square with rounded corners, 2-3mm past) is the most popular shape for long fingers because it looks clean and modern. Avoid extremely long almond or stiletto on naturally long fingers — they can look witch-like.

Wide Nail Beds — Go Almond or Oval

Wide flat nail beds (the nail plate is wider than it is tall) need a shape that tapers the tip. Almond and oval pull the visual width to a point. The tapered tip makes the nail bed look narrower in proportion. Avoid square — the flat wide tip matches the wide nail bed, creating a broad square look that is not flattering.

Fuller Hands, Shorter Fingers — Go Coffin or Ballet

Coffin (tapered straight sides + flat tip, 4-5mm past the fingertip, also called ballerina) is the most elongating shape available. The straight sides create a clean vertical line. The flat tip prevents the "claw" look of an extreme almond. Best for: fuller hands with strong nail beds. Requires longer nails (4-5mm past the fingertip minimum) — short coffin does not work.

Narrow Nail Beds — Go Square or Round

Narrow nail beds (the nail plate is taller than it is wide) look best with shapes that add width at the tip. Square or round fill the visual gap. Avoid almond (too pointy, emphasises the narrowness).
